Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy, usually from the sun, into chemical energy stored in glucose (a type of sugar). This process is essential for life on Earth because it is the primary source of energy for nearly all living organisms.

How it works:

Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of plant cells, particularly in the green pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight, and with the help of water and carbon dioxide, it produces glucose and oxygen. The overall chemical equation for photosynthesis is:

Steps of Photosynthesis:

1. Light-dependent reactions: These occur in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplasts. In this stage, light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll and other pigments, which then produce energy-rich molecules (ATP and NADPH) and release oxygen as a byproduct.

2. Calvin Cycle (light-independent reactions): This occurs in the stroma (the fluid-filled space in the chloroplasts). The ATP and NADPH from the light-dependent reactions are used to convert carbon dioxide into glucose through a series of chemical reactions.

Importance of Photosynthesis:

• Oxygen production: Photosynthesis is responsible for producing the oxygen we breathe.
